Wav is a format for storing digital sound files that was developed jointly by Microsoft and IBM. Support for WAV files was built into Windows 95 making it the standard for sound on PC's. WAV sound files end with a .WAV extension and can be played by nearly all Windows applications that support sound. Many professional PC-based digital audio recording and editing systems use WAV files as their standard.

The process of digitizing includes the following steps:

1: An analogue signal is sent through the sound card via a Microphone or Guitar etc.

2: The signal is converted to digital (Wav) via the digital to analogue converter in the sound  card.

3: The digitized signal is stored on the computers hard drive as a wav file.

The .wav files as all the others can be edited by the proper sound editing tools
